The University of Hawaii at Hilo Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program is hosting the Pulama I Ke Ola Healthcare Conference 2004, June 17-19 at UH Hilo’s University Classroom Building Room 200.

The three-day conference is designed for both health care professionals and students considering a career in health care. The conference will highlight a variety of topics unified around health promotion and the theme “hold life precious.”

Keynote speaker for the conference is Hob Osterlund, RN, MS, CHTP, a clinical nurse specialist in pain and symptom management and the founder of Hawai‘i’s first acute pain management program at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Osterlund is a national lecturer on topics related to pain management, complementary care and humor in health care as well as a freelance journalist and award-winning nonfiction writer. Osterlund also has a comedic alter-ego, “Ivy Push, RN,” an English-Irish-Scottish-Hawaiian-Chinese-Portuguese nurse with an attitude molded by 40 years of hospital nursing.

Topical highlights of the conference include research on air quality and asthma, toxicology and HAZMAT, diets and dieting, educational issues and clinical practice on pain management, workplace violence prevention and intergenerational programs.

Conference registration for health professionals for the three-day program, which includes the opening session, lunches, refreshments and conference abstracts, is $195. Registration for the opening reception on Thursday, June 17 from 6-8 p.m., which includes a guest lecture by Des Haumea on “Culture and heath: following your ancestral call,” is $25. Registration for the Friday, June 18 session, which includes lunches, refreshments and conference abstracts, is $100. Registration for the Saturday, June 19 session, which includes lunches, refreshments and conference abstracts, is $90. The student conference is June 18 and 19 only. Registration for nursing, medical and allied heath students is $75, including lunches, refreshments and conference abstracts. The conference is limited to 20 students, who must show ID and register via the UH Hilo BSN office. There are high school poster and essay contests with monetary prize awards, as well. Registration for high school students, including lunch, refreshments and conference abstracts, is $50, limited to 50 high school students who must register via the health career pathways counselor at their respective high schools.
