For Immediate Release
The Heritage Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo North Hawaiʻi Education and Research Center (NHERC) presents a public lecture by Dr. Peter Mills and anthropology student Nicole Garcia titled “An Intimate Look at 19th Century Life in North Hawaiʻi” on Thursday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the NHERC Conference Room in Honoka`a.
The presentation will focus on the research done by Mills and Garcia on early store ledgers from Waimea and Honoka`a dating from the 1860s through the 1880s. Mills has been looking at ledgers from the Humu`ula Sheep Station store, while Garcia has been working in the Heritage Center archives on ledgers from Holmes Store (now the North Hawaiʻi Community Federal Credit Union). What people were purchasing during this time period reflects the changing patterns in domestic life and material goods in North Hawaiʻi.
