For Immediate Release

The public is invited to enjoy an evening of art, music and fine foods at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo and Hawai`i Community College Board of Student Publication's Gallery Walk on Thursday, May 2, 2002. The evening begins at 5:30 pm in Campus Center 306-307.

Gallery Walk participants will visit a total of eight campus sites highlighting prominent campus artwork, including UH Hilo and HawCC student artwork. This semester's sites will include: pieces on loan from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts displayed in the Library; the sculpture in front of the Chancellor's office; a UH Hilo and HawCC student art exhibit in the Campus Center Gallery; student artwork submitted to the campus literary and art magazine, Kanilehua; and the sculpture in front of the Theatre.

"Many of the art pieces that will be highlighted have been on campus for years, yet no one knows their history or even their names," said Courtney Albin, chair of the Board of Student Publications. "The Gallery Walk will honor these pieces by bringing their stories to life."

Participants that visit all of the Gallery Walk sites will be eligible for raffle prizes at the end of the evening. Raffle prizes will include: current issues of Kanilehua; art supplies and gift certificates donated by Island Art Supply, Ben Franklin Crafts, and Island Imageworks; and original works of art by UH Hilo and HawCC's own professors, Jim Kelly, Linus Chao, and Gordon Lee. Participants must be present at the end of the evening in order to win the raffle prizes.

The Gallery Walk will feature music by The Cigar Band and other student musicians of UH Hilo and HawCC. Participants will also enjoy sparkling cider and pupus.

"The Gallery Walk is a great opportunity for the Hilo community to come together and enjoy the art and music of the students of UH Hilo and HawCC," said Albin.
