For Immediate Release
Students in grades K-12 have the opportunity to attend select performances at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Performing Arts Center this year at no charge. The Center annually provides educational outreach programs for schools in the greater Hilo area, which includes four events during the 2011-12 Performance Season.
Charmaine Clamor blends the soul and swing of American Jazz with traditional Filipino folk-music, languages and instruments to create a new hybrid of music she calls “jazzipino.” The UH Hilo Performing Arts Center and Performing Arts Department’s production of Go, Dog Go! is a musical adaptation of PD Eastman’s classic children’s book, sharing the joys of color, shape and movement in an explosion of canine shenanigans. First Person: Seeing America is a multi-media production portraying the events that shaped our nation through photographs, written words and musical accompaniment. Living Waters: Kulanihako’i is a hula drama that draws from epic Hawaiian myths to tell the many facets of water through the eyes of contemporary native Hawaiians.
"Maintaining the presence of the arts in our schools is extremely important,” said Performing Arts Center Manager Lee Barnette-Dombroski. “We feel, as a Performing Arts Facility within a university setting, it is our responsibility to nurture the youth of our community in every way possible."
Charmaine Clamor performs on Friday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m.; Go, Dog, Go is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday November 4-6 and 11-13 at 7:30 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday; First Person: Seeing America is scheduled for Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.; and Living Waters: Kulanihako`i takes place on Saturday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m.
