# UH Hilo Math Placement Exam

The exam you are about to start is a placement exam covering the areas of pre-algebra, algebra, and trigonometry. This exam determines which UH Hilo math course will prepare you for the rest of your math requirements. You will have 2 hours to complete 4 parts, each part with 10 multiple choice questions. Each correct answer is counted as 1 point. Incorrect answers and blanks are scored as 0's. Based on your score, you will be placed into Math courses numbered 103, 104, 104F, 104G, 115, or 205. If you want to register for Math 100, 108 or Math 121, you do not need to take this exam.

You have the option of taking the placement exam online or in-person, particularly if you need accommodations for disability or are not able to view the math as shown below. Please contact Kilohana: The Academic Success Center for more information.

## Cheating

You are expected to answer the exam questions without any external resources or references beyond a simple, non-graphing calculator. Using such outside resources for this exam is considered cheating.

## Scoring the Exam

After you submit your exam, it will be evaluated immediately and you will see the Math course(s) in which you most appropriately place. It is highly recommended that you print the results page.

The courses that can be determined by the math placement test are math 103, 104, 104F, 104G, 115, and 205. If you want to take a course above the listed ones, you need to present evidence that you can challenge the higher courses and request such consideration. It will be dealt with case-by-case by advising from a math faculty member. If you want to take math 100, 108 or 121, you can just go ahead to register for it. There is no need to take the placement exam.

Based on your performance on the exam, you will be placed into one of the following:

• Math 205
• Math 104 or 104G
• Math 104F or 115
• Math 103

If you do not meet any above criterion, you are placed in Math 103 with a warning message that you may not be ready for the lowest course offered at UHH, and may have to repeat the course before passing it.
