The Math Center
The Math Center offers free, walk-in tutoring for all math courses (as well as tutoring math concepts in other courses) and features several computers with MathCad, Minitab and Pearson’s MyMathLab. Math tutors are UH Hilo students selected for their excellence in math and trained to facilitate mastery of math concepts and skills.
Our tutors are qualified students majoring in Mathematics or one of the other natural sciences who have demonstrated a keen interest in math and more importantly a desire to share what they have learned with others. Our tutors are proficient in a wide range of math topics from Math 100, College Algebra, pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics; some are able to tutor math from other natural science courses or upper division math courses as well.
At the Math Center we maintain a professional yet casual atmosphere - aimed at lowering "math anxiety" and providing an excellent place to meet with fellow students to discuss homework.
Please feel free to stop by for a visit, and encourage students to use the Math Center. It is a safe and positive learning environment and we work hard at keeping it that way.
Tips for a Successful Math Conference
- Come Early! If it seems like your professor is speaking another language, or your homework goes from challenging to incomprehensible, don’t wait until the day before the exam! Come to the Math Lab and let one of the trained tutors help you get back on track.
- Make Sure Your Foundation is Solid. Most math courses build new skills and knowledge on previously learned concepts. If you barely survived an earlier course, you might find yourself in over your head in the next course. Before that happens, let one of the math tutors help you strengthen your mastery of the foundation concepts you’ll need to excel in your current (or next) class.
- Make Math A Habit. Spending a little time every day on your math is a much better way to learn it than cramming long hours a day or two before a big exam. The Math Lab is your space ~ use it! Make it a habit to drop in and do your homework there. That way, if you have any questions, someone trained to help you learn the material is there for you.
- Be Realistic. The Math Center tutors are there to help every UH Hilo student. They get busy, which means they can’t always spend hours working with one student. The best way to make use of their time is to have a specific question, get the help you need, and then work on your own to make sure you understand the concept.
