Students who may require accommodations for this (or any) placement exam should contact the University Disability Services office before taking the exam.

Who should take the Chemistry Placement Exam?

Students who are thinking of majoring in Agriculture or any science should take this exam so that they may register for either CHEM 114 or CHEM 124.

When & where can I take the Chemistry Placement Exam?

Once you have signed up for a UH username and password, you can take the placement exam online via Laulima at any time. You will need to follow these instructions to find and take the exam.

Students who are unable to take the online exam can take a placement exam on campus. On-site exams are scheduled during Orientation, Advising, and Registration week each semester.

Returning students who need to take the Chemistry Placement Exam before registering for Summer or Fall 2011 can make an appointment to take the exam by calling (808) 933-3428.

It is strongly recommended that you spend a few days reviewing problems similar to what will be on the exam before taking it.

How and when may I get my results?

Results are available as soon as you finish the exam. Please print a copy of the results for your records; you may need to show it to your academic advisor. Exam scores are uploaded into student records once daily the week before and the week of each registration period, and on the last day of each month the remainder of the year. Students cannot register until their scores have been uploaded. If you are unable to register and do not see your score in STAR within 24 hours of taking the online exam, please call (808) 933-3428 for assistance.

What is this test, and why do I need to take it?

The Chemistry Placement Exam is a sixty question multiple choice exam that covers general mathematics (20 questions), general chemical knowledge (20 questions), and specific chemical knowledge (20 questions). It is assumed that students have had one full year of high school chemistry and full year of high school algebra.

The purpose of the exam is assist with the placement of students in college-level general chemistry courses where they will have a high probability of success. Students scoring 32 or above (out of 60, or 53%) will be allowed to register for CHEM 124 while those scoring below 32 will be advised to register for CHEM 114.
