Chemistry Placement Assessment
Students may take the assessment once per semester; be prepared before you begin the assessment!
Students who may require accommodations for this (or any) placement assessment should contact the University Disability Services office before taking the assessment.
Who should take the Chemistry Placement Assessment?
Students who are thinking of majoring in Agriculture or any science should take this assessment so that they may register for either CHEM 114 or CHEM 124.
When & where can I take the Chemistry Placement Assessment?
Once you have signed up for a UH username and password, you can take the placement assessment online via Laulima at any time. You will need to follow these instructions to find and take the assessment.
Students who are unable to take the online exam can take a placement assessment on campus. On-site assessments are scheduled during Orientation, Advising, and Registration week each semester.

It is strongly recommended that you spend a few days reviewing problems similar to what will be on the assessment before taking it.
How and when may I get my results?
Results are available as soon as you finish the assessment. Please print a copy of the results for your records; you may need to show it to your academic advisor. Assessment scores are uploaded into student records once daily the week before and the week of each registration period, and on the last day of each month the remainder of the year. Students cannot register until their scores have been uploaded. If you are unable to register and do not see your score in STAR within 24 hours of taking the online assessment, please call (808) 933-0572 for assistance.
What is this test, and why do I need to take it?
The Chemistry Placement Assessment is a sixty question multiple choice assessment that covers general mathematics (20 questions), general chemical knowledge (20 questions), and specific chemical knowledge (20 questions). It is assumed that students have had one full year of high school chemistry and full year of high school algebra.
The purpose of the assessment is assist with the placement of students in college-level general chemistry courses where they will have a high probability of success. Students scoring 32 or above (out of 60, or 53%) will be allowed to register for CHEM 124 while those scoring below 32 will be advised to register for CHEM 114.
