UH Hilo Home > Faculty & Staff > Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs > Emergency Operations Plan > Appendix C: Actions for Specific Emergencies
In the event of an explosion at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo or Hawai‘i Community College, or the threat of an explosion--such as those caused by leaking gas, a faulty boiler or both within a campus/site building--the following will be accomplished:
Explosion
- If an explosion occurs without warning, take cover by lying on the floor¹.
- If the explosion occurs within the building, or threatens the building, the instructor should immediately evacuate the building.
- Move to an area of safety, and maintain control.
- Check for injured persons. Render first aid if trained.
- Notify the Chancellor’s Office. The Chancellor’s Office will notify Security and other agencies as needed.
- Fight fires only if trained and without endangering yourself or others.
- Students and staff should not return to the building until Fire Department officials declare the building to be safe for occupancy.
- The Chancellor will direct further action as required.
Threat of Explosion
- Sound the building fire alarm. This will automatically implement action to evacuate the building.
- Follow procedures 3 through 6 under "Explosion" above.
- The Chancellor will direct further action as required.
¹ Faculty should instruct students to react in the same manner on their own to this type of catastrophe in case it occurs when the faculty is temporarily not present.
