About QUEST: Quantitative Underwater Ecological Surveying Techniques
QUEST is a field course offered through the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo campus that focuses on ecological monitoring ofcoral reefs using SCUBA. The course takesplace during the last two weeks of May every year. Students will work from camp Maluhia at Keʻei, south of Kealakekua Bay, for the duration of the course. Students involved in QUEST must have current University of Hawaiʻi Scientific Diver authorization, valid throughout QUEST. SCUBA tanks and sampling equipment will be provided, but students will need to provide their own basic equipment including dive and camping gear. QUEST is composed of two different courses, QUEST (MARE 264) and Advanced QUEST (MARE 364).
About Our Summer Marine Science Program
The Marine Science Summer Program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is designed to take full advantage of the "Big Island" of Hawaiʻi's variety of marine environments ranging from deep ocean to coral reef to estuary. An exciting array of ocean activities is planned. These activities are designed to stimulate the student's interest, provide experience-oriented learning and take full advantage of the island's exotic offerings.
With its combination of an ideal environment, excellent curriculum, outstanding instructors, its new laboratory and classroom building, and research/teaching vessel, the UH Hilo Summer Marine Science Program is one of the best opportunities in the nation for undergraduates to study marine science. In recognition of this exceptional summer program the UH Hilo Summer Marine Science Program has received an "Award for Excellence of Program" from the Western Association of Summer School Administrators, an organization representing over 80 member universities in the western U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Many Marine Science courses require instructor consent to enroll. Please contact the Marine Science instructor(s) of the courses you are interested in as early in the spring as you can. Space is limited and enrollment is on a "first come, first served" basis.
