Comments from Former and Current Students

I came to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo for diversity, opportunity, and a great education. The Political Science program here has given me just that. Having worked in the US Senate and local politics prior to attending, my professors gave me the ability to apply the practical skills and knowledge that I had gained to what I was learning in the classroom, as well as giving me the skills necessary to get involved and succeed. As such, I have served in a variety of capacities at the university including student Senate Secretary and President of the student body. I credit my achievements in large part to the determination and support of my professors to see me succeed both in and out of the classroom. As a graduating senior at the university and as a candidate for officer in the U.S. Army, I can look toward my future with confidence knowing that the education and leadership I received in the major will follow me in my endeavors and has prepared me for success.

I highly recommend UH Hilo’s Political Science Department. In the POLS Dept, students have the opportunity to interact and work closely with faculty who have a wealth of knowledge about all the disciplines in political science. The benefits of pursuing a political science degree at UH Hilo can be further seen in the unique opportunity available to participate in the local political process. There are many chances to get involved with local campaigns, work with local parties, and intern with the local and state elected officials. It is in this way that I have been provided the opportunity to get involved in local politics and through this was led to join Governor Linda Lingle’s staff as her East Hawaiʻi Liaison. I now have the chance to apply the things that I have learned from the professors in the department every day in my job in state government.
