The staff of Ka Noio ‘A‘e ‘Ale and the students of English 323 wish to thank the following for their help in making this anthology possible.

First and foremost, we wish to extend a warm mahalo to Avery Allan Berido, whose artwork graces this book. His incredible talent lends a remarkable flair to this project.

Juliet S. Kono Lee of Leeward Community College made an outstanding appearance as a guest lecturer. Her exercise on “metaphor” and “symbol” (along with the theme “When I was Young
”) prompted students to turn out remarkable poems on childhood. She also served as a critical reviewer for student drafts, offering in-depth comments for revisions.

Russell H. Shitabata of Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon conducted an informative presentation on oral history and its importance in literature.

Mark Panek of UHH similarly shared his research with English 323; the subsequent discussions on “local” identity were thought-provoking. He also lent his eagle eyes and red pen for proofreading.

Raenette Marino’s personal recollections of her own writing process and her feedback on early works-in-process provided important peer inspiration to the class.

Kainani Kahaunaele and Larry Kimura both shared with the class their views and insights on the Hawaiian language and mele composition. They, along with their colleagues Iota Cabral and Ka‘iu Kimura of UHH’s Ka Haka ‘Ula o Ke‘elikƍlani, provided their expertise on the Hawaiian language and poetic techniques. Iota Cabral further assisted with the naming of this book; he and Kainani Kahaunaele generaouly gave of their time in proofreading the selections in Hawaiian. And Kalena Silva supplied much-needed guidance on the proper spelling of place names and the use of ‘ƍlelo no‘eau. Mahalo hou iā ‘oukou i ke kƍkua a me nā mana‘o.

Sia Figiel and James Kneubuhl offered support and critical guidance for the Sāmoan writers who find their way into this book. We also wish to thank Chief Patea Fa‘amanĆ« (Nu) Teofilo for helping to proofread Sāmoan language passages.

Sincere appreciation is likewise expressed to Lou Zitnik of Hawai‘i Community College and Mark Panek for urging their creative writing students to submit additional material for this book.

Photographic assistance was provided by the following: Pradeepta Chowdhury, Sarah Ko, Jerry Lomongo, Taz A. Rosham, Shannon Satterwhite, Lisa and Brett Kaneshiro, Tomiye Toto, Stefani-Frances Balala, Richard Park, James Knuebuhl, and Shawn Zenor.

Institutional support was provided by the following: UHH Humanities Division, the Department of English, Craig Severence and the Pacific Studies Certificate Program, and Karla Hayashi and the Writing Program.

As always, Susan Yugawa and Darin Igawa of Graphics were invaluable in their rendering of the material. Thanks also to Carole Kuba and Cathy Gourd for providing clerical support and to Sharyl Kasarskis and Paula Gealon for administering grant monies.

We are also indebted to the HAWCC/UHH Board of Student Publications, the Office of Student Equity, Excellence, and Diversity (SEED) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for providing the funds that made this book possible.

Last but not least, the General Editor wishes to thank the students of English 323 and her assistants—Shana Aue, Jason M. Foxworthy, Dana Lynn Kapi‘olani Borabora, and Lori Chenault—for their amazing work in polishing and strengthening submissions without infringing upon the creativity or individuality of the writers. That took patience, endurance, hard work, wit, and a funky sense of humor (not to mention countless dinners at Encore). Was one hoot, gang
t’anks, eh?
