UH Hilo Geology Club
The purpose of the Geology Club is to promote an appreciation and understanding of geology as a scientific field, in particular as applied to the Island of Hawai’i and the State as a whole. A chief goal of the Geology Club is to enhance student involvement and academic achievement in the basic sciences of chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology as they relate to geology and the natural environment.
What we do and how we do it?
The Geology Club is an extracurricular activity that allows for ALL students (not just Geology majors), faculty, friends of the club and members of the community to get together and interact in an informal situation. Some of the activities include: hikes to the active lava flows, monthly Pau Hana's (Hawaiian for "End" "Work" or more commonly known as a BBQ / social gathering), Trivia Night, trips to the summits of Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Kohala, Hualalai and Kileaua, camping trips around the island, exploring the wide variety of beaches on the Big Island (white sand, green sand, black sand), trips to other islands to explore the different geologic features not present here, fundraising and probably one of the most fulfilling activities of community outreach and education (Country Fair, Earthquake seminar's, campus events, local school visits, etc..).
All these things are possible due to the hard work and dedication of the members that choose to participate in these activities in addition to working, going to school full-time, teaching, parenting and the many things that keep people busy in their everyday lives. The Geology Club is very fortunate and greatful to have support from the UHH Geology Department faculty, the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes and professional geologist that help with special events.
How do you get involved?
You do not have to be a major, staff or even a student at the university! We are mandated by our Charter to have at least 6 full-time students that are currently enrolled at any of the University of Hawai'i campus locations and our membership cannot exceed more than 75% of non-students. This is rarely an issue because most of the members are in fact current studnents looking for a reason to get together and do things during our off time.
You can join the club by making a donation of $5 for membership dues and simply provide your email if you would like to be contacted about upcoming events. The $5 membership covers one academic year (Fall, Spring, Summer) and goes towards funding many of the events listed above. Other advantages are reduced amount for activities that may require a deposit (which is most times refundable upon showing up). We are also in the process of making unique membership cards to show your support for the club and may grant you special privelages at a later date!
