Upward Bound College Preparatory Programs

The Upward Bound Programs are federally funded outreach programs sponsored by UH Hilo since 1979. Yearly the programs assist 200 Hawaiʻi economically disadvantaged and/or potential first-generation high school students to develop the skills, motivation, and knowledge necessary to enter a postsecondary institution in pursuit of a bachelor degree. Information about the Upward Bound program and applications may be obtained from high school counselors at the target high schools, by contacting the Upward Bound Office or at the following website: hilo.hawaii.edu/academics/ub/. Upward Bound serves students attending Hana, Hilo, Honokaʻa, Kaʻū, Keaʻau, Kohala, Pāhoa and Waiākea high schools

Classic Program

High school students exhibiting potential and strong desire to complete a bachelor’s degree are encouraged to apply. Students are provided supplemental instruction and tutoring in core college prep classes, learning skills and college preparatory workshops, academic advising, career exploration opportunities and extensive exposure to the college campus environment. Students are assigned a full-time advisor and college students serve as participant mentors throughout the academic school year as well as during the six-week on-campus Summer Academy. Over 130 Hawaiʻi students participate yearly.

Math and Science Program

High school students exhibiting interest in careers requiring a strong command of mathematics and science are encouraged to apply for the Upward Bound Math/Science Program (UBMS). The mission of UBMS is to assist students, from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), in acquiring strong math and science skills and knowledge about the career opportunities available in STEM fields. Upon completion of UBMS students are encouraged to pursue postsecondary majors leading to a degree in mathematics, science, engineering and/or technology. Over fifty-five Hawaiʻi students participate yearly.
