Kilohana: The Academic Success Center

Kilohana’s mission is to support the learning and retention of all UH Hilo students by fostering the development of independent, self-motivated learners. The Center offers subject-specific support and academic skills development and builds networks with other units on campus. In this way faculty and other members of the campus community are aware of and can utilize effectively the full spectrum of services that support student success.

We offer a variety of services, including:

• peer tutoring through the Math Center, Science Center, and Writing Center
• seminars & workshops
• placement testing resources

In addition to the services above, Kilohana offers print and electronic resources for students and faculty, hosts workshops for students and faculty, and coordinates the chemistry, math, and writing placement exams for incoming new students.

The Math Center

The Math Center offers free, walk-in tutoring to all students needing help with mathematics or with mathematical concepts from other areas. The trained peer tutors have demonstrated a strong understanding of mathematics and a desire to share what they have learned with others.

The Math Center has several computers with MathCAD & MINITAB software, access to the Internet and a pay-to-print station. The casual atmosphere makes the Math Center an ideal location for students to discuss homework and study for exams. The Writing Center

The Writing Center assists students with academic writing assignments in all disciplines. Trained peer tutors help students discover and develop topics, generate information to support ideas, organize information, refine their writing style, and edit their own papers. Tutors can also review a previously graded assignment to help students improve future performance. Additionally, the Writing Center has a reference library with the major style and citation guides for students to use in the center.

The Science Center

In Spring 2012, Kilohana’s newest branch will open in the Science and Technology Building, Room 117. The Science Center will host trained peer tutors in the natural sciences as well as resources for undergraduates interested in the natural sciences, and a Research Office-supported STEM Coordination Center, which will connect science majors with research opportunities and other special programs.
