Counseling Services provides a safe setting in which students may explore personal, educational and life planning concerns; makes referrals to community resources; and serves as consultants to faculty and staff. We help students who are dealing with everyday problems related to university life, as well as more serious concerns.

Services are available on both a walk-in and appointment basis. Students seek counseling for a variety of issues such as:

  • Adjusting to university life
  • Enhancing confidence and personal effectiveness
  • Developing strategies to challenge self-defeating feelings/behaviors (e.g., anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse)
  • Enhancing interpersonal skills and dealing with relationship issues
  • Coping with crisis (including sexual harassment and assault)
  • Handling grief and loss
  • Clarifying educational and life planning goals and decisions
  • Improving academic performance
  • Referrals for psychiatric consultation

Students access Counseling Services on a self-initiated basis. Frequently, however, concerned faculty, residence hall staff, athletic coaches, or other university staff refer students for assistance regarding a variety of problems. Counseling Services staff also work closely with members of the Advising Center, Student Support Services, Women’s Center, Health Services and other Student Affairs programs to provide academic, emotional and social support.

In addition to working with students individually, Counseling Services staff conduct support groups on a variety of mental health topics, as well as play an active role in presenting self-development and psycho-education workshops to the University community.
