North Hawaii Education and Research Center’s (NHERC) Heritage Center in Honoka’a opened a new exhibit “Honoka`a Loves Music” on August 23rd.  The reception included a touching opening chant by Lanakila Mangauil, as well as special messages from Senator Brian Schatz, Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa, and Governor Neal Abercrombie.  Gilbert Awong, a former member of the Hāmākua County Band, untied the maile lei to open the exhibit.

The Honoka`a High School Jazz band led by Gary Washburn gave a lively performance while about one hundred community members enjoyed the exhibit, pupus and festivities.  Many of the photos feature family members from the North Hawaii community, giving people much to discuss and reminisce about.

The “Honoka`a Loves Music” exhibit will be on display for one year and will include musical events every few months.  Watch for these upcoming events on the NHERC website and the Hāmākua Times.  The exhibit is free to the public, so please join in celebrating North Hawaii’s rich musical legacy.
