UH Hilo Psychology Department offers the Psychology Major requirements for the Psychology BA degree to address the needs of the residents of Maui County, Kauai, and West Hawaii.  Courses are offered via online and ITV instruction.  Residents of Maui County, Kauai, and West Hawaii are eligible for entry to the Psychology BA DL program if they have 1) completed an AA degree (including Psy 100) or 2) completed the UH Hilo General Education requirements (including Psy 100) and have Junior standing (55+credits).

No new students will be admitted to this program until further notice.

NOTE:  International students are not eligible to obtain an F-1 visa through a DL program.

Items of interest:

  1. Three Psychology Distance Learning (DL) courses (online and/or HITS) are offered each semester for which students in the Psychology DL program have priority enrollment.
  2. There may be DL-program courses offered that you have already completed.  There may be DL-program courses offered which you cannot take if you have not yet completed the required prerequisite courses (this is especially a concern if you enter the DL-program mid-way through the course rotation schedule).  If your financial aid or degree completion timetable requires additional courses for each semester, you will need to enroll in UH Hilo online classes from other disciplines (other than Psychology) or from other UH campuses.
  3. Students in the Psychology DL Program do not have enrollment priority in online courses that are not specifically designated as DL-program classes.
  4. Online Psychology courses are frequently offered during the Summer Session. These courses are optional - they are not required.
  5. Acceptance to UH Hilo does not mean a student is accepted into the Distance Learning Psychology Program.
  6. In accordance to UH Hilo policy, any student who terminates his/her enrollment at the University by not registering for a semester must reapply for admission.  Such enrollment termination will also terminate the student’s enrollment in the Psychology DL program.  At time of readmission to UH Hilo the student may request a seat in the DL program and will be placed on the waitlist until a seat becomes available.

Educational planning takes time. It involves:

  1. Completion of the AA degree including Psy 100 or UH Hilo General Education Requirements including Psy 100 and Junior standing (55+ credits)
  2. Review the Psychology Degree Requirements
  3. Contact the Distance Learning Coordinator, Candace Wheeler, before you apply to UH Hilo. She will help you in the UH Hilo enrollment processes.
  4. Acceptance to UH Hilo is not acceptance into the Distance Learning Psychology Program.
  5. The Psychology Department will help you with program course advisement.
