Introduction to Screenwriting
UH Hilo Home > Academics > College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS)

Film has its own unique language when it comes to creating a story. The backbone of every story is the screenplay and in this six-week course, students will be able to learn the basic rules of story telling, proper formatting and tips on how to perfect their story. Students will learn how to write dialogue, build story structure, and develop memorable characters. A variety of films will be studied and broken down into raw elements; produced and unproduced Hollywood scripts will be analyzed and critiqued. By the end of the session, students will produce a 30 minute script with an option to submit for professional coverage. Students will also learn how to write inquiry letters for script submission. Taught by Darrell Gabonia, who attended the Academy of Art University, majoring in Motion Picture and Television. He later worked in Los Angeles, most prominently with non-profit 826la and talent management company, Principato-Young.
