Benefits of Beekeeping: Products of the Hive

This series of courses combines lecture, lab and fieldwork components in each of the classes to introduce the novice to bee biology, beekeeping equipment, honeybee health issues and products of the hive. Taught by Danielle Downey, Apiculture Specialist with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, whose previous experience includes teaching and research at universities in Minnesota, Utah, Canada and France. First Lessons in Beekeeping by Keith Delaplane ISBN 0915698129 is highly recommended. Online resource also available.
Students will review bee biology with a focus on products of the hive, learning how they are collected and used. The various products derived from the hive include honey, wax, royal jelly, bee venom, propolis and pollen. Some will be used to demonstrate making candles, soap and lip balm.
