Beginning Beekeeping: From the Beginning

This series of courses combines lecture, lab and fieldwork components in each of the classes to introduce the novice to bee biology, beekeeping equipment, honeybee health issues and products of the hive. Taught by Danielle Downey, Apiculture Specialist with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, whose previous experience includes teaching and research at universities in Minnesota, Utah, Canada and France. First Lessons in Beekeeping by Keith Delaplane ISBN 0915698129 is highly recommended. Online resource also available.
Students will learn about beekeeping including its origins and history, the biology of bees, beekeeping equipment and its use, colony placement and development, bee disease and hive inspections.
