Beginning American Sign Language & Deaf Culture
UHH Home > Academics > College of Continuing Education and Community Service
This course is for anyone interested in interacting with those who use sign language as their main form of communication. Using both modes of silent and voiced portions throughout the class, students will gain confidence in understanding and “speaking” sign language. We will focus on pre-sign language skills in order to establish the correct mindset and structuring for American Sign Language grammar and spatial representation. Beginning sign vocabulary will be introduced as well as Deaf Culture topics for discussion. No prior experience is necessary. Ku Mei Kern, nationally certified through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and daughter of deaf parents, instructs. Signing Naturally I book recommended but not required.
