Course description

Vegetable cultural methods, postharvest handling method and marketing. Special emphasis will be placed on growing crops for market sales. Pre: Hort 262 or consent of the instructor.

Prerequisites

Hort 262.

Course Objectives

To introduce students to (1) vegetable production, cultural methods, variety selection, and marketing, and (2) commercial growing operations in Hawaii .

Lecture Topics

  1. Classification systems used for vegetable crops.
  2. Production statistics and marketing.
  3. Climatic requirements of vegetables and the effect of climate on crop growth.
  4. Cultural practices associated with various crops with an emphasis on Solanaceous crops, Cucurbits, Legumes, Salad crops, and Cole crops.

    3. pest control (weeds, insects and diesases)
    4. harvesting

Laboratory Topics

  1. Student participation in the growing of various crops. Includes land preparation, planting, control pests, fertilization, harvesting.
  2. Participation in the grading and marketing of vegetable crops. Includes grading, packing and sales.

Guide for Term Paper

Objective: To familiarize the student with obtaining information on crop production and marketing.

Choosing a topic: Topics are confined to vegetable crop production or innovative horticultural practices. Consult with the instructor if you have questions or problems in identifying a topic.

Scope: The paper should review the topic thoroughly. Literature citations are encouraged.

Format: Paper must be type-written and double spaced. Hand-written papers will not be accepted.

The topic should be approached systematically. The outline presented below is an example of an acceptable format:
